JOIN THE BCA DEMONSTRATION
The Leaders of Bangladesh Caterers Association are calling upon all people of conscience to turn out for a major demonstration at noon on Sunday, April 20, 2008 between 11.30-3.30 pm at the Trafalgar Square, to protest the recent raids in the Bangladeshi owned restaurants in the name of searching illegal immigrants. In many cases the raids have been very heavy handed and causing harassment both to owners and employees. By doing this, it has been causing terminal damage to the curry industry throughout the country. We hope to have thousands of people principally from the Bangladeshi community who account for majority of curry restaurant owners in the UK to show their opposition against such action.
· We respect the government’s new immigration policy, believing that it has been introduced in the national interest, but we are unable to understand why Government can not find an initiative that will furnish us with the opportunity to fill our kitchen vacancies with appropriate staff and save the curry industry.
· Imposition of new immigration law since 29th February 2008 doused our hope for any special curry house scheme to recruit skilled curry staff from abroad. Bangladeshi owned curry houses, which annually contribute 3.5 billion to the British Economy, have long been suffering from acute staff shortages.
· While we were negotiating with the government either to open the Tier-3 or to include Curry Workers in the shortage occupation list of Tier-2 of point based system, the recent raids in the restaurants in the name of searching illegal immigrants are making a fatal blow to our industry. It is appearing as the one last nail in the coffin. We understand that it is severely affecting restaurants businesses in the UK.
· We regret that Point Based new immigration law requires academic qualifications to work in restaurants under the “skilled migrant” schemes where `working experience and ethnic knowledge’ is not taken into consideration. Again, government is not implementing Tier-3 of the point-based-system, which could have helped us in getting our staff from abroad. For reasons unknown to everybody, Tier-3 has been withheld for indefinite period of time.
· The demonstration will be held at the Trafalgar Square. At that time, we will announce the demands for justice that we are making to the British Government for a long time. Representatives of numerous community organizations, and progressive political leaders have been invited to speak at the demonstration.
· This demonstration must be a show of strength and numbers as we are seeking to force the authorities concerned to negotiate with us. Demonstrators are urged to bring picket signs. We expect a large police presence; so demonstrators are encouraged to arrive on time, behave in a disciplined manner, and to disperse in an orderly manner promptly at 3:30 p.m.
· We have 12,000 restaurants, 90,000 staff, 250,000 dependents who rely on this industry. A financial catastrophe is impending unless action in this area is expedited.
· We urge all Bangladeshi restaurateurs in the UK to participate in the demonstration with their staff, friends and family members to support our causes and express their solidarity with BCA demands.
· We will petition the Prime Minister to:
1. Work with the BCA (Bangladesh Caterers Association UK) which is the largest representative body of Bangladeshi caterers to resolve its problems of staff crisis and skills shortage,
2. Stop all BIA raids on Bangladeshi Catering Businesses including restaurants, curry houses and takeaways,
3. Regularize undocumented Bengali speaking migrant curry workers,
4. Relax the immigration rules that restrict unskilled/semi-skilled workers from entering the country so that Bangladeshi chefs, cooks, kitchen porters can enter UK and keep our curry houses and restaurants running,
5. Recognize knowledge of kitchen language (i.e Bengali/ Sylheti) as an essential skill to be considered by Migration Advisory Committee.’
