What is The Points Based System (PBS)
- The Points Based System (PBS) is a new system for managing migration for those wishing to enter the UK for work or study. There are 5 Tiers.
- Tier-1 for highly skilled workers, Tier-2 for skilled workers, Tier-3 for low skilled workers, Tier-4 for students, Tier-5 for Temporary workers such as Youth Mobility Scheme
- Which one is the easiest Tier to go to UK for work and live?
- It depends on your qualifications. But at the moment Tier-2 is the easiest if your are a skilled chef as you will score 50 points automatically in the points system. This is because skilled chef is in the Shortage occupation list.
What is Tier 2 visa?
- Tier 2 of the Points Based System (PBS) for UK immigration replaces the previous work permit scheme as part of the new five tier visa structure for the UK.
- In order to make an application under Tier 2 of the Points Based System non-EEA nationals must have a confirmed offer of employment with a UK company.
- Tier 2 work permit applicants must have a registered sponsor/employer and must have a Certificate of Sponsorship. In addition to this, all Tier 2 work permit candidates are also assessed against a point test, the pass mark for which is 70 points.
I want to go to UK as a skilled chef under Tier-2. How will I be assessed?
- Candidates seeking to immigrate to the UK under the tier 2 visa category will be assessed on their qualifications and their prospective earnings and you need to score at least 70 point to be considered for a visa
What is Certificate of Sponsorship?
- A certificate of Sponsorship is a digital document issued by UK Boarder Agency when a sponsored UK employer wants to employ a non EU citizen in the UK.
How to get a Certificate of Sponsorship?
- Your UK employer has to apply for the Certificate of Sponsorship on your behalf to UK Boarder Agency. Your employer has to be a licensed employer for this purpose.
How many points do I have to score to qualify for the T2 work permit?
- Under the UK Point Bases System (PBS) you have to score at least 70 points.
Points from Qualifications
A PhD qualification - 15 points
A Master's Degree - 10 points
A Bachelor's Degree - 10 points
An NVQ level 3 qualification - 5 points
Points from Prospective Earnings
In excess of £24,000 - 20 Points
£22,000-23,999 - 15 points
£20,000-21,999 - 10 points
£17,000-19,999 - 5 points
Non-shortage positions will be worth 30 points
Positions in the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) will be worth 50 points
English proficiency -10 points
Availability of Fund – 10 points. At least £800 to be in your own account for three months prior to your application

What is the shortage occupation list?
- The UK Shortage Occupations List details the professions that are in high demand in the UK. Employers for the occupations listed below are not required to advertise the posts they wish to fill. Positions in the shortage occupation list will automatically achieve the required pass-mark of 50 points.
I am a skilled Chef, how can I go to UK for work?
- You have to score 70 points all together to get the VISA. This how you can get 70 points:
- Since you are a skilled chef you score 50. If you have £800.00 or equivalent in your own account for last 3 months, you score another 10. If you pass a specific English Test (such as IELTS, ESOL, TOEFL etc) you score another 10 points. In total 70 points.
- In addition to the above, you also need to have a Certificate of Sponsorship which your UK employer will get from UK Boarder Agency
Can I change my Employment after entering UK on Tier 2 Work Permits?
- Tier two work permit holders are able to change their job while in the UK, however they will be required to obtain a new Certificate of Sponsorship from a sponsorship licensed employer and will also need to undergo a reassessment against the current points test.
Can I obtain Permanent Residency after some time?
- Tier 2 work permit holders will have the opportunity of gaining permanent residence in the UK provided they live and work in the UK for the minimum requirement of five years. Once a tier 2 work permit holder has satisfied this five year requirement they may qualify for Indefinite Leave to remain in the UK (ILR), which can be then be followed by British Naturalization as a UK citizen.
Can my spouse and children immigrate with me?
- Tier 2 work permit visas can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and as such tier two makes provision for the spouses and common law, civil or unmarried partners of the applicant and any dependent children to immigrate to the UK at the same time.
