Tandoori Villa wins Colchester Curry Chef Competition

Masum Ahmed of Tandoori Villa, Stanway, has been voted Colchester’s top curry chef in a competition organised by Colchester Borough Council in partnership with Colchester Institute.

The competition took place in the Colne Bistro, Colchester Institute on 26 June.  The finalists had to prepare one main curry dish, one complementary side dish, and a rice dish.  The dishes were scored on taste, aroma, texture and presentation

The main aim of the competition was to engage with Indian premises in the Borough and raise standards of hygiene in these businesses.  A condition of entry into the competition was that the business must have a food hygiene rating of 3 (generally satisfactory) or above.

Press Release - BCA calls for tougher food safety controls and condemns sensationalist reporting

On Monday, 8 April 2013, the Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA) called for further tests, tougher punishments and better enforcement to regulate the Curry Industry. At the same time, it is asking the media not to sensationalize reporting just to sell newspapers at the expense of the Curry Sector, which contributes almost £4 billion to the UK economy.

BCA and UKBA join forces to support BCA Members

Pasha Khandaker, BCA President meets UKBA officials in a bid to work together and strengthen alliances for to benefit BCA Members.

Initial meeting took place in December 2012; a successful second meeting took place on 18th March 2013 at UKBA offices. During which an exchange of views on current immigration status and selected case history discussions took place. Present at the meeting were Pasha Khandaker, Richard Quinn, UKBA, Director National Operations & Assurance, Bob Whiteman UKBA Chief Executive and Jackie Fowler UKBA Assistant Director for Kent. A positive start to the relationship the meeting was a positive air of views and opinions which will now o form an overall strategy to work more closely together moving forward to benefit both parties.

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, Cambridge Regional College invited celebrity chef and curry guru Oli Khan along for an Indian cooking masterclass. Lydia Fallon donned her apron and hat to give it a go

First a confession; an Indian takeaway might possibly be my biggest vice. Come Friday night, I often find myself daydreaming of crispy popadoms, a sweet dollop of mango chutney and a creamy, coconut korma. Cooking a curry from scratch though always proves tricky to master.
